TITLE: THE SHIPS OF DISCOVERY
2004 18 X 30 INCHES
The name Discovery continues it’s history of
association with crafts of
scientific and geographical exploration. In 1984, when NASA named one
of their
space shuttles Discovery, we were reminded of the British National Antarctic
Expedition of 1901-’04 under the leadership of Robert Falcon Scott.
The ship,
which remained in Antarctica with them for three years, was named Discovery.
Antarctica is often the base for field trial programs for equipment used
in
space. It is the closest conditions on Earth to those found on some moons
and
planets in space.
