Title: EDWARD A. WILSON; The SKETCHES:
1990 15X 19,5 INCHES
Edward Wilson:
1872-1912, British explorer, artist, naturalist, doctor, ornithologist.
"Bill" Wilson was born in Cheltenham, UK,
the son of a doctor. As a boy he
was fascinated by the natural world near his home. He began drawing at
an
early age.
He studied natural sciences at Cambridge University,
and later studied
medicine. In 1898 he was discovered to have tuberculosis. Following a
convalescence, he volunteered to join Scott's first Antarctic expedition,
(1901).
With Scott and Shackleton he reached 82 degrees south,
the farthest at that
time. Later, Shackleton wanted him to join his Nimrod Expedition, but
Wilson
declined partially based on his friendship and loyalty to Scott. On
Scott's second
expedition (1911), Wilson was appointed head of the scientific
staff.
