FRANK HURLEY:
1885-1962, Australian photographer
Hurley bribed a train conductor to get a seat
next to Mawson, and persuaded
the explorer to take him to Antarctica. He was a member of the first party
to
the Magnetic Pole and established a sledging record of 41 miles per day.
Later he joined Shackleton’s Endurance expedition.. His
photographs of the
adventure are classics of ordeals on the ice. He was a photographer in
both world
wars. He made films in central Australia and New Guinea, a well as reportage
photography in many parts of the world.
