TITLE: WHEN SIDNEY PARKINSON SKETCHED THE
RAIN FOREST.
DID HE EVER DREAM WE WOULD BURN THEM?
1999 18 X 26.5 INCHES
Sidney Parkinson:
1745-1771, British artist / draftsman. Prior
to voyaging the Pacific and the east coast of Australia, Captain Cook's
first expedition explored the coast of Brazil, and the vast rain forest.
Here they acquired many specimens which expedition artist Parkinson quickly
sketched and worked-up into paintings. This would set a pattern for the
future
recording of explorations.
Two hundred years later, we have set fire to
these rain forests for
exclusively commercial reasons. When Sidney Parkinson sketched the forests
and their
inhabitants, did he ever dream we would burn them?
