TITLE:' WILLIAM BRUCE; SCOTLAND FOREVER!'
2003 14 X 27.5 INCHES
WILLIAM SPIERS BRUCE:
1867 - 1921, Scottish explorer, naturalist.
"The ice had cast its indescribable mysterious
glamour over our souls."
Bruce was born in London, the son of a surgeon. He
studied medicine and at
the age of 25 he went to Antarctica as a surgeon and naturalist on a whaling
expedition. Having made voyages to the Arctic, he later turned down Scott’s
offer to be the naturalist on his first expedition to the Antarctic. Sponsored
by the Coats brothers, manufacturers of paisley cloth, Bruce formed his
own
expedition to the Antarctic, (1902 - 1904). There he discovered and named
Coats
Land for his patrons, explored the Weddell Sea and wintered over on Laurie
Island. A quiet and private person, he was also a fervent Scottish nationalist.
This was often a problem when soliciting funds in England. Later he became
an
authority on the area of Spitsbergen, and the manager of a whaling station.
He
died after a long illness. His ashes were scattered on the deep and frigid
seas that surround Antarctica.
