The Fram was built in 1892 in Norway for the famous Arctic explorer Fridtjof
Nansen. She was almost egg-shaped, and could rise up and out of the ice
instead of being crushed. In 1907 Amundsen requested her from Nansen for a North
Pole attempt. With the North Pole conquered by Peary in 1909, Amundsen secretly
changed his plans. His secrecy had to do with knowing Scott was going south
at the same time. He did not tell Nansen., or anyone else. He headed South,
where he was first to the Pole, beating Scott by a month.
